We are The Academic Pit.

Our
Values

Clarity

Grad admissions isn’t hard because you aren’t capable, it’s hard because the process is not transparent.

We turn vague advice into clear steps so you know what matters, what order to do it in, and what each document is really meant to prove.

Strategy

We don’t do “generic tips.” We help you apply like someone who understands how departments think.

That means positioning, program fit, and building an application where every asset reinforces one coherent story.

Execution

Knowing what to do isn’t the same as doing it well.

We focus on the actual materials—statement of purpose, research statement, CV/resume, writing sample, letters, interviews—and how to optimize each one so it increases your chances of more “yes” decisions.

Access

Too many students are expected to navigate this without mentors, networks, or an academic family.

We exist to close that gap, making insider-level guidance available through free checklists and primers, plus paid playbooks when you want deeper step-by-step tools.

OUR PEOPLE

The Academic Pit is founder-led and intentionally personal.

This work comes from lived experience—navigating grad admissions without insider guidance, learning the unwritten rules, and then teaching them in a way that’s clear, practical, and actually usable.

I built The Academic Pit because I know what it feels like to apply without a roadmap.

As a first-generation scholar, I didn’t have an academic family, a built-in network, or someone breaking down what admissions committees really mean when they say “strong statement,” “good letters,” or “fit.” Most of the process felt like a riddle you were expected to solve quietly.

I went on to earn both a master’s degree and a PhD from an Ivy League institution—not as a flex, but as proof that you can succeed without inherited access. The Academic Pit exists to make that path clearer for you.

I'm an Associate Professor at Michigan State University with over 15 years of experience navigating academia from graduate school at Columbia University to faculty positions at NYU and MSU.*

I know firsthand the challenges of balancing research, teaching, service, and personal well-being in academic life.

My research bridges Middle Eastern history and public health, and I've published in leading journals while securing grants from the National Institutes of Health and other major funders. But beyond the CV lines, I've learned what it really takes to succeed: managing imposter syndrome, writing productive grant proposals, navigating difficult committee work, supporting students through crisis, and maintaining boundaries when institutional demands threaten to overwhelm.

As a woman of color in academia, I understand the unique pressures of invisible labor, the endless service requests, the emotional work of mentoring students from marginalized communities, the expectation to represent entire populations. I've co-chaired diversity initiatives, founded faculty associations, and advised countless students while still producing scholarship and teaching.

I've spent countless years mentoring undergraduates entering graduate school from reviewing recommendation letters to overseeing research projects, and I know what makes a strong application and what prepares students for academic success. I created this platform to share what I wish someone had told me: practical strategies for writing, time management, navigating institutional politics, and building a sustainable academic career. Whether you're applying to graduate school, working toward tenure, or rethinking your relationship with academia altogether, I'm here to offer honest, actionable guidance rooted in real experience.
